Embossing was invented in the 16th century by bookbinders to give relief to the covers of fine books. It’s a printing technique used to produce raised patterns on paper, thin cardboard or fabric. This is a rare and pure technique, using no ink or colour, which brings out the best in paper and light.
You will be preparing several elements for the press: abstract or figurative. If you have already some linocut plates, they work exceptionally. If not, we’ll provide some samples of objects and textiles for you to work with.
In addition to its graphic aesthetic possibilities, it’s particularly successful on textured creative papers, and especially handmade paper. It’s a way of creating minimal, reflective works in a world awash with visual noise!
NB: Please make sure you bring a rigid folder to take your work home with you.
