Etching
In a Nutshell
Learn about drawing through a wax ground on a zinc plate, and use the corrosive action of an inoffensive acid to etch the lines into the metal. It is preferable (but not essential) to have some experience of drypoint before doing this workshop.
- Learn to etch on zinc plates and create your own prints on paper with Véronique & Katya, both experienced etchers.
- Bring along any interesting sketches or photographs you may have that you would like to make into a print.
- At the end of the workshop you will have several proofs & prints of your etched plate.

Etching is a truly fascinating technique, although it takes slightly more time to master than other methods. Once you’ve learned how to make a drypoint, ink the plate and use a press, you’ll be better able to create etched prints and this is why we suggest some prior experience.
This method of printing, known as ‘intaglio’, involves incising lines or areas on a metal plate using acid. We use a non-toxic acid (iron chloride) and zinc plates, neither of which are dangerous for health.
During this workshop, you’ll learn about each stage in the etching process: preparing the plate, applying the varnish, drawing on the plate, biting time, inking up the plate and choosing the best paper for your work. You will then use our professional press to bring your creation to life, which will be a reversed image.
At the end of the workshop, you’ll have a series of proofs and limited prints that you can sign, number and give as gifts. It’s a technique full of magic and unexpected surprises!
NB: Please make sure you bring a plastic rigid folder to take your work home with you.
