Monoprints
In a nutshell
Monotype is a printing technique that produces a single print each time, hence ‘mono’. There are no strict rules, only guidelines to play with which gives tremendous artistic freedom.
With your tutors Peter & Katya, you’ll explore mark-making with a variety of tools, supports and recycled materials and will produce a series of small test prints exploring the limitless potential of this medium. We’ll use hand printing as well as printing with our press to cover all the options.
- A discovery of several techniques of monotypes using plexiglass and metal plates.
- By the end of the workshop, you’ll have several unique prints on paper to take home.
- No experience necessary.

Monotype involves drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface which you then transfer to paper. Historically, a copper plate was used, but today zinc, glass or plexiglass are commonly used.
In this workshop, you will begin by experimenting with a trace monotype, this involves drawing directly on a plexiglass plate which you then print onto paper by hand. The second step is working directly on the same plate to transform the existing image, which you will then print onto paper using a press.
Finally you will work directly on the plate, painting using printing inks, creating textures with rags and cotton buds and finally pulling a print using the press. You can work back and forth, layering new shapes and colours until you obtain the desired image.
NB: Please make sure you bring a rigid folder to take your work home with you.
