This introductory course plunges you into the sublime world of handmade paper, using readily available equipment and unusual materials. Learn the simple and poetic techniques of transforming paper scraps into beautiful handmade sheets of paper which can then be used for drawing, writing, painting, bookbinding….
You’ll learn how to make paper pulp from three different sources: discarded books, paper scraps and mount board. You will then prepare vats and form A5 sheets using a mould and, the marvellously named ‘deckle’. You’ll decorate your sheets by adding various organic and inorganic elements, then press them to remove excess water and dry them at home.
The handmade papers are made sheet by sheet, a totally absorbing and zen-like process. Our workshops will teach you the basics of papermaking while encouraging experimentation and creativity to create unique and distinctly personal paperworks.
NB: Please make sure you bring a plastic rigid folder to take your work home with you.
