Gelli Printmaking
In a nutshell
Gelli art is a playful and spontaneous activity that uses flexible plates made of synthetic gelatine to create unusual and colourful patterns. This workshop is run by Katya, an artist printmaker, and she’ll show you how to produce dynamic, layered works using paint, a wide variety of materials and simple techniques. These prints are called ‘monotypes’ as each one is unique.
- At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a generous pile of unique prints on paper.
- We’ll show you how to develop your monotypes and give you ideas for mounting or framing.
- No experience necessary.

Gelli monotypes combine the techniques of painting and printing, with which you can create an infinite array of patterns and colour combinations.
The gelli plate is coated with paint using a roller, you then lay various materials on it and use your hands to lightly rub the surface of the paper, thereby transferring the textures to the paper.
It’s a quick and easy way to create backgrounds and details by hand, or to print various shapes. Stencils, stamps and other textured objects can be used to create the designs.
The Gelli Plate is ideal for printing unique papers for mixed-media, bookbinding, scrapbooking and more. Gelli printing is extremely easy, spontaneous and highly addictive: once you’ve tried it, you won’t be able to do without it! Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can practise at home with very little equipment.
NB: Please make sure you bring a rigid folder to take your work home with you.
